The CPC Brass band

Established is April 2004, the Christian progressive college band as we all know it, was Mr khelo’s desire to promote music in the school. Fuelled by the former principal of the school Dr PAB v.d Merwe and Mr van Niekerk who was our first trainer and band master.

The band started. As we all know that the beginning is always the most difficult part. Starting the band 2004, we did not have any idea of how things should be done. None the less by June 2004 we were excitedly on our way to Limpopo for band camp organised by the South African army band. It was another new set up all together because we were introduced to a new system of writing and reading music notes.

band2During that week we learnt a lot of things with the help of the SA Army band in Limpopo and we saw ourselves going somewhere. And apart from the training during the day, every evening we could go around the town of Limpopo , in shopping malls which showed us that band was not all about playing instrument but also having fun on the other hand.

In August 2004 Mr khelo met with Mr Brian Bouncher who came up with a proposition of national competitions. This was a great leap for a band who initially thought that the band was for our own entertainment. Unfortunately that year we could not it to the competitions because it was already too late to catch up since the competitions were to take place by September 2004. By then we could only play one song “Amavolovolo”.

In October 2004 the band performed at the renaming of the ES’KIA MPHAHLELE library and in November we performed at our Prize giving ceremony and this gave us great joy most especially for our parents and those who did not have any idea of what the band was all about. From there it has been an upward journey for the band with several workshops in Empangeni, competing in leagues at spring boy’s high school, Benoni, Ermelo, Van der Bijl Park, springs and eventually at national level in 2006 where the band came 5th out of the 9 competing bands.

By 2007 our band had two categories; the concert, marching and the percussion group. Since then we have invited to perform for governmental departments, attended successful band workshops and we still attend a lot of competitions locally and nationally as far as in the Kwazulu Natal.
